I cittadini ucraini preferirebbero un maggiore avvicinamento all’Occidente o no?

È possibile equiparare la Spagna all’Italia?

Cosa ci puoi dire a riguardo?

Giulia Koroliova is Ukrainian, she was born in Luhansk, in Donbass. Her father is Ukrainian, while her mother is Russian. Bilingual since childhood, in Ukraine she studied in schools where both Russian and Ukrainian were taught. In 2013, she tells me, she left her hometown because of the war. She moved to St. Petersburg, where she graduated. She currently works as a translator in the field of cross-cultural collaborations. She has been teaching the English language for almost four years. She considers the Ukrainian idiom her mother tongue, through which, she says, the soul of her people, their traditions and cultural values are expressed. He tells me that “in 2013, on TV, they started propaganda against Ukraine. They talked about a better life by joining Russia.” Some people believed it. “In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea – Giulia continues – they were trying to convince people that they would live better under Russia. When Putin’s army occupied Crimea, the population did not want a new bloody war and surrendered”.

What did the 2014 Euromaidan protests represent for the Ukrainian people? Would Ukrainian citizens prefer more rapprochement with the West or not?

I was not present at Euromaidan, I prefer to let the witnesses speak.

It gets me the testimony of Denis Gaida, a young Ukrainian who was present at the street protests, which I report here:

In the winter of 2013-2014 Ukrainians protested against the corrupt, Russia-allied government of Janukovyč and the Party of Regions. The trigger was the government’s refusal to sign an agreement to join the EU. Later, police abuse of protesters was added, resulting in revolutionary actions throughout Ukraine. Ukrainians fought for a change of government, new elections, and criminal prosecution of politicians involved in police abuses, torture of activists, and arbitrary arrests. They also wanted to free all political opponents. EU membership was, however, the most important reason, as confirmed by numerous sociological researches. The majority of Ukrainians support EU and NATO membership. During so many years of war with Russia, Ukrainian people are more and more convinced that in the East there is the enemy, Russia, while in the West there is the friend, Europe. Ukraine will integrate with the West, it is only a matter of time.

I ask Giulia then: the hegemonic narrative states that the Russian-speaking population of the Donbass would prefer to be ruled by Moscow instead of Kiev. How much truth is there in this statement?

Ukraine and Russia are two completely different countries. Each has its own history, traditions and language. Is it possible to equate Spain with Italy? No. So I say to the pro-Russians: stop comparing Ukraine to Russia. Because Russian TV channels are broadcasting in the Donbass, people are being fed Kremlin propaganda. They use manipulation. Putin puts Ukrainians in conflict with each other. Do you remember the motto of Ancient Rome? Divide et Impera? This is exactly why blood has been flowing in Ukraine for eight long years.

The Kremlin accuses the Ukrainian government of being composed of “Nazis” and foreign military. What can you tell us about that?

In 2014, the Donbass was also occupied by Chechens. Ukraine is not the land of Chechens. They live in the Russian Federation .In Ukraine there is no Nazism in the government, which perhaps we cannot say about Russia, where in power there is a man who gives medals of honor to murderers and rapists of little girls.

What do Ukrainians expect from this war? A victory or a reasonable agreement?

If Ukraine wants peace with Russia? After the terror in Bucha surely not. Ukraine wants to keep its sovereignty, because it is an independent state, which has the right to exist, just like Italy has.

What is your opinion of Vladimir Putin?

Vladimir Putin is a cynical terrorist, indifferent to the fate not only of Ukrainians, but also to that of his people. In all these years of government, with his avarice he has swallowed up Russia and now he wants to extend his power even at the cost of the lives of children, civilians and the elderly. Putin is mafia, death and terror. In the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk he has distributed a huge amount of Russian passports, but the life of the people has not improved. In my land there is no work, the average salary is 70 euros per month. I wish, as a Ukrainian, as a citizen of Donbass, as a person, that Putin would leave my country. Europe must stop the denationalization of Ukraine.

What can you tell us about Janukovyč?

In 2014, the president of Ukraine was Viktor Janukovyč, a man from Moscow, three times convicted by my country’s criminal justice system. Twice he was put in prison.Viktor Janukovyč, at first, presented himself to Ukrainians promising to move towards the European Community. Many, despite everything, saw in him a hope for the development of Ukraine. But the situation changed when he found himself choosing between moving closer to the EU or remaining a friend of Russia. In the end he did not sign Ukraine’s application for EU membership. A lot of people did not accept it and the Maidan uprising broke out, during which people protested against this choice and expressed their desire to join the EU. After Euromaidan, Victor Janukovyč moved to Russia and is considered the traitor of Ukrainian people.

I think that already at that time Russia was planning to invade Ukraine and take control of it. There are many Russian agents in Ukraine. I can say, trying to answer your important question, that Euromaidan was a struggle for freedom. At that time, in 2014, Ukrainians were not aware of so many things, but they rejected the choice made by the ruling bandits, taken without their consent. Now Ukraine has signed a draft to join the EU. It is a long process, but the following events will shape an absolutely new alliance.
